Herb's Records: Tee design
Art Direction | Illustration | Design

Herb's Records is (probably) Aotearoa’s first and only Mobile Record Store, curating the weird, obscure and wonderful specialising in vinyl, cassettes, CD's, tees and retro gaming consoles.
Being a self-confessed 80s pop-culture nerd and long-time vinyl collector, I was so honoured to be asked by Herb’s to design an image for their shop’s merchandise. Dream come true!
‘Herbs’ as a concept lead the design overall. Gardens and giant plants coming alive to wreck havoc or save the day, depending on your view.
The design is a remix of various found vintage ephemera … recycled ads and movie posters of the bygone 'golden' era of mass media made into something new. Only original and un-edited speech bubbles from conversations found in real comics feature. So no ad-libbing from me to try and make it seem cool and clever, as it was all cute and funny already.
The original lettering from the ’Day of the Triffids’ film artwork inspired and has been cut up and reworked into ‘Herb’s' as a super fun and horror-esque font (the actual triffid from that film is in the design too). And of course records and music and its hypnotising quality is a main focus too. It’s just good dirty rock’n’roll fun 🤘
The design features on lovely lilac/lavender tees and natural canvas tote bags, available at Herb’s now.
